I grew up with the Monday Night Wars so when I heard of AEW coming into existence, I was one of the excited ones. Competition brings out the best in everyone so I expected to see them come out strong with a great roster putting on nothing but bangers of matches in order to compete with a company that had been around since what seems like the beginning of time. My expectations were high, things were about to get good. or so I thought.
Here came the first edition of Dynamite and by the end of it, I said nope, this ain't it. it felt like a ripoff, it felt cheap. it felt like a show that was trying too hard to be different when they really just wanted to be the same but better and it still feels that way. let me explain with pointers.
Production:
Backstage interviews seem too rehearsed, camera angles during matches missing the action, audio issues, Backstage producers producing terrible matches, excessive blood, wrestlers clearly communicating with each other during matches, blading being caught on TV. Never using tag ropes. Unlimited time in the ring after tags or when interfering during a tag match.
Talent:
I get that the young guys need to shine in AEW and they need to build stars but you really gonna give us Ry:icky Starks in the Main Event? The Gunns? Wheeler Yuta? Golden Oldies Sting and Jericho? I get the nostalgia but it's too late. Sometimes you gotta let sleeping dogs lie and let the imagination do it's part. we don't need to put two guys in their fifties and sixties against each other just to get a pop. trying everything for ratings but nothing is working. The Elite aren't the answer, maybe Kenny Omega yes, but the Young Bucks, Hangman, they aren't the ones. The Dark Order was fun, then Brodie left us, R.I.P. hasn't been the same since. And then so much talent that isn't on TV that should be and so many that are that shouldn't be. Put your talent in the right positions, Omega, Danielson, Moxley, CM Punk, Samoa Joe, Wardlow, Jay White, Adam Cole, MJF, Scorpio Sky are the guys you need to have on Dynamite each week all vying for that main title but I'm not seeing them, they're split between shows when the rosters aren't that strong to begin with. WWE can do a brand split because they have so much actual talent, AEW, you don't so don't do it. Rampage needs to go!
Psychology:
Most AEW matches are just matches. thrown together for no reason. There's long term storytelling but is it anything we care about? The psychology of wrestling is missing from AEW and they need to find it and find it soon. Make it believeable, make me think that these two hate each other for real, not the WWE punchlines you guys do all the time. Get us, the viewers to care to tune in each week. Run a huge invasion angle with new talent and push them to the moon. We need factions we care about. So much is missing.
Commentary:
Man, Vic Joseph is bad, I don't understand how he has a job in WWE and I think everyone agrees with me. But the AEW commentary team is pretty terrible. Schiavone with the It's Sting still, sounds so bad everytime he says it, he's fallen off. The man with the mask has a voice i for one just feels doesn't fit wrestling. Taz when he's on commentary is always the best but something needs to change, it's just not clicking for me.
Too Much TV - AEW is just trying to do too much, from reviving Ring Of Honor to adding two weekly shows after Dynamite, they seem to be satisfying TBS and TNT or Warner Brothers or whoever but they're not impressing the viewers. we're going to eventually tune out if the product doesn't improve, that's why people aren't turning up to the shows!
AEW - Sometimes less is more.
